Stop Planting More Trees: Why Virginia Landowners Should Practice Regenerative Forestry

đź“– Reading time : 3 minutes

During a recent visit to the historic streets of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, we came across a truly magnificent willow oak. Standing tall and proud at a prominent intersection.

This tree commanded attention with its graceful presence and impressive stature. Its broad canopy stretched outward like welcoming arms, a living testament to what a tree can become when given the freedom to thrive.

We often hear the mantra that “more trees are always better.”

In many ways, that feels intuitively right—especially amid concerns about climate change and urban heat.

Yet the reality of healthy forests and urban landscapes is more nuanced.

If we were given full authority over urban planning and forestry initiatives across the United States, we would enthusiastically plant thousands of new trees. But we would also strategically remove many others.

Trees Are Like Humans — They Need Room to Flourish

Trees, much like humans, have fundamental needs: space to grow, nutrient-rich soil, ample water, structural support, and above all, abundant sunlight. When these essentials are lacking, even the best intentions can lead to struggling ecosystems.

Across much of Virginia and the eastern United States, many of our forests—once vibrant and resilient—have become overcrowded and under-resourced. Saplings and mature trees grow too closely together, locked in fierce competition. They fight for every ray of sunlight, their roots struggle in depleted soil, and their branches remain stunted, unable to reach their full potential. The result is a forest that looks green from a distance but is, in many places, unhealthy and vulnerable to disease, pests, and extreme weather.

The Willow Oak That Had Everything

Now contrast that with the willow oak we encountered. This specimen had everything it needed. With generous spacing around it, its limbs extended boldly in every direction, forming a large, symmetrical, and beautifully balanced crown. Its trunk was thick and solid, its bark healthy, and you could easily imagine children (or adventurous adults) climbing into its welcoming branches. Below ground, its root system had room to spread wide and deep, drawing on abundant water and nutrients that allowed the tree to reach its majestic size.

One Core Principle of Regenerative Forestry

This is the essence of regenerative forestry.

It’s not simply about planting as many trees as possible.

A well-spaced, healthy tree becomes far more than just another plant in the landscape. It transforms into a powerhouse:

  • A resilient anchor for its entire ecosystem
  • An exceptional carbon warehouse that sequesters significantly more COâ‚‚ over its lifetime
  • A prodigious oxygen producer

Such a tree offers superior habitat for birds, insects, and wildlife. Its broad canopy provides cooling shade for streets and buildings, while its strong structure withstands storms and supports surrounding vegetation rather than competing against it.

The Takeaway for Landowners

The next time you see a lone, magnificent tree standing proudly in a park or at a street corner, take a moment to appreciate it. Its grandeur isn’t an accident—it’s the result of having room to breathe.

In our efforts to restore the environment, we should remember this lesson: sometimes, less truly is more. Strategic planting paired with intelligent management creates landscapes where individual trees—and entire ecosystems—can reach their highest potential.
